Products
Here at HiFeed, we’ve been hard at work to translate our technology into food and supplement products. Part of that is in breeding the perfect pea varieties- we intend to grow high iron pea shoots and mangetout.
Our Head of Product Development, Tegan, has been growing peas hydroponically to identify the optimal conditions for a nutritious, high iron, flavoursome pea shoot. She also grows plants at the John Innes Field Station to measure how they grow under more typical agricultural conditions.
With our current HiFe pea variety, Tegan has been experimenting with lots of different methods of processing our harvested pea plants to maximise the iron content and bioavailability. As a result, we have now managed to make a pea powder that has a fine consistency, and significantly more iron than current, commercially available pea plants.
HiFe pea powder
Normal pea powder
Pea powder
Our pea powder would make a bioavailable, non-toxic alternative to traditional iron supplements, with greatly reduced negative side effects.
We would like to experiment with making capsules, juice drinks, and gummies. The high iron content allows this powder to be added into other plant-based foods to enrich the iron content. We also intend to develop a flavourless, high iron pea protein product from our variety, which would increase its versatility and appeal.
Pea Shoots
In the long term, we aspire to be a company growing nutrient-enhanced foods.
We are working hard to optimise the growth conditions for delicious, high-iron pea shoots to use in salads and sandwiches, which would look and taste the same as normal pea shoots, but help people to meet their iron requirements.
Get Involved
Our innovation can be applied to legumes and beyond! Our vision is to produce HiFe alternatives to other crop species, making it easy to meet your daily iron needs using plant-based foods that can be easily integrated into your diet.
If you would like to partner with us on a crop development project, or think you might have a use for our HiFe pea powder, please get in touch with us via our enquiries page.
